Age Calculator
Calculate your exact age, how many days you have been alive, and a countdown to your next birthday.
What is Chronological Age?
Your chronological age is the amount of time that has elapsed from your birth to the present moment. In most Western cultures, age increases by one on each birthday. In other cultures, age can be counted differently; for example, in traditional East Asian age reckoning, a baby is considered one year old at birth and ages further on the Lunar New Year.
This calculator computes chronological age using the standard Gregorian calendar, representing your age in completed years, completed months, and remaining days.
How Age Is Calculated Mathematically
To calculate chronological age:
1. Subtract Years: Determine the difference between the birth year and target year. If the target date's month and day are before the birth date's month and day, subtract 1.
2. Subtract Months: Calculate the remaining completed months since your last birthday.
3. Subtract Days: Calculate the remaining days since that monthly anniversary.
Calendar Variance & Leap Years
Because months vary in length (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and years vary (365 or 366 days in leap years), simple division (e.g., dividing total days by 365) results in inaccuracies. Our calculator uses the `date-fns` library to handle exact calendar boundaries.
For example, a person born on February 29 during a leap year will only experience a calendar birthday once every four years, but is legally considered to age by one year on either February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years.
Time Units Comparison
Below is an example of different time units for an age of 30 years:
| Time Unit | Calculation Method | Equivalent Value (approx) |
|---|---|---|
| **Years** | Calendar difference | 30 years |
| **Months** | Completed calendar months | 360 months |
| **Weeks** | Total days ÷ 7 | ~1,565 weeks |
| **Days** | Cumulative days lived | ~10,957 days |
| **Hours** | Total days × 24 | ~262,968 hours |
Fun Age Facts
- Skeletal Remodeling: Every 10 years, your skeletal system completely replaces itself, meaning your bones are never older than a decade!
- Cellular Age: Different cells in your body have different lifespans. Colon cells live for only 4 days, skin cells live for 2 to 3 weeks, while some brain neurons last your entire lifetime.
- Heartbeats: On average, a human heart beats about 2.5 billion times by the time a person reaches 70 years of age.

Frequently Asked Questions
Chronological age is calculated by subtracting your birthdate from the target date. It counts completed years first, then completed months since your last birthday, and finally the remaining days.
The calculator handles leap years automatically. Because it uses exact calendar date arithmetic from date-fns, years containing February 29 are correctly calculated as 366 days, keeping all calculations 100% accurate.
To find the exact hours, the calculator multiplies the total number of days you have lived by 24 hours. Enter your birthday and current date to see your total hours lived calculated instantly.
If you were born on a leap day, in non-leap years your birthday is legally celebrated on either February 28 or March 1 depending on jurisdiction. The date arithmetic library counts full years based on the matching date boundary.
